Reuters is reporting that the 4.7″ iPhone 6 will be arriving in August, one month earlier than most other media outlets. Reuters cited the Economic Daily News as the source of the report. The report also indicated that 80 million iPhone 6 handsets would be produced including a 5.5″ handset that is expected to arrive in September.

From Reuters:

TAIPEI, May 9 (Reuters) – Apple Inc will unveil the next incarnation of its popular iPhone series in August, one month earlier than industry watchers were generally expecting, Taiwanese media reported on Friday citing unidentified supply-chain sources.

A 4.7-inch screen version of the iPhone 6 will reach stores in August, the Economic Daily News reported without specifying which markets would receive the phone first.

A 5.5-inch or 5.6-inch model will be released in September, the newspaper said, as the iPhone 5 series was previously.

People involved in the supply chain had earlier confirmed to Reuters that there will be a 4.7-inch version of the iPhone 6 and a 5.5-inch version.

Together, the Economic Daily News said 80 million iPhone 6 handsets would be produced this year

Arnie – I think we might get some relief June 2 at WWDC. I did some charting based on current moves. There is a 1 year channel and the rising bottoms line looks like it is at about $13ish. Assuming that holds, it projects a 3X rise in that same rising bottom over 1 year….yea a long time to get to high $40s but that is the rising bottoms line. My gut feel is that we could see $10 – 11 as stocks over shoot in both directions.
I am long GTAT. I have a bad habit of dumping at the bottom. So I am hanging in there… Matt has well outlined the positive long term fundamentals…

Assuming Matt’s numbers are correct…it would take a lot of other revenue sources to meet the low end $600m that TG has committed to… One would hope and assume that the low end guidance is very conservative and blowing out the $800M is what every CEO likes to do.

    Hi Matt
I tremendously appreciate your advice/ guidance / research.
I’m looking for some reassurance now. GTAT is the sole stock in my portfolio (save for my registered investments ).
    I’m all in with 28000 shares. I own these-they aren’t margin calls.
I was smiling at 19 and even though I’m up 10% at close today it’s unnerving.
    What’s your estimated bottom?
Has this downward spiral shaken your confidence?
Are you continuing to buy the dips?
    Appreciate your advice.

Viking – As Matt said, nothing has materially changed with GTAT as far as we know. The earnings call was yesterday. TG guided as no change in course or expectation. Had he known of a material deficiency which should have rendered that guidance inaccurate, he would have been in violation of his fiduciary responsibility and potentially subject to big lawsuits if not criminal.
So, if Apple suddenly decided to change course and screw GTAT (highly unlikely) which would have justified a huge pull back, he would have been obliged to disclose it or in any case not claim he was meeting his prior numbers.
With that out of the way, it becomes a technical market analysis puzzle and you can see my comments above in this thread.
Hang on to your hat it will be a wild ride…they always go down faster than up…

  4. I think a sapphire iWatch is a certainty, but I’m starting to question a sapphire iphone this summer. Rumors swirling everywhere, so I guess we wait and see.

375 sapphire furnaces per module, 5 modules….that is a LOT of sapphire…that said, we hear nothing about ramps up for Gorilla glass which would be a counter indicator….so it will be interesting…
A contrarian perspective: TG gave legitimate guidance as required by law. Institutional investors determined Apple had delayed iPhone 6 sapphire screen but the guidance by TG would be met with iWatch and other revenue sources. The prospect of a non-announcment June 2 set off selling as it would indicate iWatch only not iPhone 6 cover. We will wait and see,

Iphone 6 may still arrive in July. Misinterpretation of original report by many news outlets concluded September launch from report by Taiwan’s Commercial Times. However if one google translates the actual report it says:

“Apple’s supply chain rumors, Apple will deliver a 4.7 -inch iPhone in the third quarter, the market is also optimistic about the size of enlarged iPhone, expected to create a new wave of buying boom, and the master also won about 15% of new iPhone orders, is expected to begin in September of goods, coupled with the old iPhone 4S, iPhone 5C, estimated this year’s iPhone Pegatron point total shipments of 50 million units, compared to 3,500 million units last year, a significant growth of 40%.”

    As reported here: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2014/050914-iphone-rollup-281472.html

“So there is no “report.” It’s simply a summary of “supply chain rumors.” The “third quarter” refers to the July-August-September period, not “September” as AppleInsider asserts.

In other words, nobody knows when Whatever-it-is actually will be announced or available.”

I’m still keeping my finger’s crossed that an announcement happens during WWDC and becomes available in July.

BTW, according to the original report that Reuters picked up on, it speculates that the iPhone will be released in Q3. Could this actually refer to Apple’s fiscal Q3 that ends in June? The assumption was the end of calendar Q3 (hence Sep./Aug.), but it could really mean June. Hmmm…..
